Gandānt significance / planets / spiritual understanding of eclipse
Everything that is bad for material world is not that bad for spiritual world. For example Gandānt combination where the Rashi and ṇakśatra end is very bad for material world, however it is a condition for which yogis work for years. That is the reason why gandānt born people are eccentric. They have lot of energy which if put to right use can change the world, nevertheless if the same energy goes in wrong direction then the person will become destructive. These gandānt are formed in Agni and Jala rashis and are more powerful in Brahman rashis only. Brahmans (Not the caste based Brahmans, the real saintly souls) are very powerful. Their curse and power can mitigate a whole region. This can be seen with Chanakya who was a powerful soul, a true Brahmin who destroyed the Nanda kings.
In Jyotisa most of the things are taken from yoga śastras. In fact the whole śastras like sthapathya is also a part of yogic science. One needs to understand yoga vidhya to understand Jyotisha properly. For example Sun is exalted in Aries; for a reason and debilitated in Tula because for a soul (Sun) the worst position will be falling in the trap of sensory illusions; generated by Maya in mooladhār.
In Vedic culture Grahan is considered important, but what is the real significance of Grahan. In reality Grahan occurs every day and every fortnight. The two sandhi of morning and Sandhya are Grahan in sookśma body when the Shakti enters suṣumnā and the Shiva and Shakti unite. All worldly activities should be stopped during these two sandhi otherwise the doer suffers. This is the time for spiritual progress. The energy which is supreme is at peak and cannot be used for worldly materialistic pursuits.
Then it occurs on no moon or Amavasya and Purnima. This is at both levels, gross and subtle. Shiva and Shakti are together in bliss during Amavasya and hence the japa done during the full Amavasya time gives benefits. On Purnima they are 180 apart in straight line, like if you are standing straight in tad asana. They are not combined still it is important because they are watching each other like in a temple where ḍhvaja watches garbha. The third type is symbolic but powerful when sun and moon are eclipsed by Chaya Grahas Rāhu and ketu. Ketu actually engulfs Sun and Rahu engulfs Moon. Solar eclipse requires Amavasya and then Moon comes in between Sun and earth. It is a very important combination because first of all it is Amavasya when shiva Shakti are combined in subtle body, secondly, it is when ketu the sookśma Graha is with Sun the soul in gross cosmic form. The body of a yogi becomes a powerhouse during this combination and power needs to be utilized for spiritual purpose. The gross cosmic combination causes the other invisible planets to become powerful as Sun and Moon are together in bliss. The supreme soul sun is invisible for the time being and his lack of light causes all the rogue planets to show their impact. Hence, all auspicious activities are stopped and only mansik japam is done.
Yogis try to achieve the same situation in a subtle form, they can easily achieve the same during these combinations because what is visible in gross form in planets is happening inside the body at the same time. This is the real meaning of the sloka, “यथा पिण्डे तथा ब्रह्माण्डे”
So the recitation has to be mānsik during Grahan kala, because everything is happening at a very sookśma level inside the body. Moreover, love is secret not to be displayed outside a shop.
