Gṛha means Seizing & grasping which means that they are bodies that seize you or your persona. However, the two luminaries Sun & Moon and the five aprakaśak gṛha exercise the visible spectrum of problems. The horoscope too portrays visible seizure by these planets. But when we talk about Rahu/Ketu, we are discussing points which rule the invisible spectrum originating from ancestry of father and mother.

And when we say upgraha (the word means prisoner) then we are referring to humans, being the prisoners of the invisible spectrum. While the gṛha stands for visible changeable things upgrahas control the area which cannot be changed or altered or the part which you have to bear.

There is a reason why they do not find much of a mention in sastras. BPHS, Phaldeepika, Sarvārthacintāmaṇi, Praśnamarg & jataka Parijat gives occasional references of these planets. The calculations are clearly defined and inferences are not even mentioned except for Gulika and Mandi.

The total upgrahas including gulikādī and Dhūmādī group is 10 in number which makes the total number of planets as 19. These upgrahas and their use can only be understood when you do some sādhana or your mantra ḍevthas are Chaitanya. You will recognize that their use is mentioned in books but despite of being their it will not be visible to an ordinary eye.

I will just give you one example to understand the secret. A person who is entitled to understand this will understand the rest of the positions of upgrahas and their results as well. Remember when upgrahas point to a result, then that thing is bound to happen. These upgrahas are strongest in Kaliyuga because they rule the papa formations and as such most of the modern Jyotiśīs will lack the true and correct predictive analysis because these papa formations from invisible spectrum will change the results every time.

🦜 Example to understand: When atipāpī travels to trines of Saturn during the fourth cycle of Saturn (pūrṇāyu jātaka) then it will the time when soul will exit the mortal world. This works on other three cycles according to ayu calculations of the jātaka.

🦜 🦜 NOTE: Also remember that secrets cannot be shared with everyone as sastras abstain one from doing so. There are problematic consequences for sharing secrets. So, if you think that some wise astrologer is actually sharing his/her secrets then that mumbo jumbo is actually is not a secret but a selling point and nothing else. Those complex theories are nothing more than babble.

The very sastras that give knowledge also abstain one from sharing these secrets because of many reasons hence no real ḍaivagya or knower of sastras will ever share secrets in public. Secrets are entitled for only a chosen few.
