Immortality of Akshaya tritiya Immortality of Akshaya tritiya (14:05:2021) – The lord of ṭritiya is Mercury and gaurī/Viṣṇu. Akshaya means never ending. Fasting, ascetic austerities, charity, mantra japa etc. gives multiplied if done on this day.
Events in history – It marks the presenting of Akshaya pātra, to Draupadī by bhagavāna Kṛṣṇa, during the visit of sage Durvāsā. It also symbols the birthday of Sage Paraśurāma who is the sixth incarnation of Sri Viṣṇu, and he is revered in Vaishnava temples.
According to one legend, Maharṣī Vedavyāsa began reciting the Hindū epic Mahābhārata to Bhagavāna Gaṇeśa on Akṣaya Tritiya. Another legend states that river Ganges descended to earth on this day. Very significantly the Yamunotrī & Gangotrī Temples are opened on the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya. The temples are opened on Ābhijit Ṃuhurta of Akshaya tritiya.
Another significant event that is believed to have occurred on this day is that Sudāmā visited his childhood friend, bhagavāna Kṛṣṇa in Dvārakā, and received unlimited wealth. Kubera received his wealth and position as the ‘Lord of Wealth’ on this auspicious day.
What should one do– One should observe fast on this day and do charity. Lighting lamps and offering sevā to beloved deities is considered very auspicious. Those initiated in mantra can chant mantra etc. Some people buy Gold and silver on this day which marks the belief that such precious metals and wealth acquisition should become immortal in their life.
