Kancana kāminī & brahmacārī
Kancana kāminī & brahmacārī
A guru and his śiṣya were travelling to a hermitage and they had to cross a river for that. When they reached the bank, they saw a courtesan (woman) clad in beautiful clothes and jewellery. She was not crossing the river as she feared of getting wet. She requested the Guru to help her cross the river. The Guru asked her to sit on his shoulder and then he crossed the river. The śiṣya was surprised but did not say anything. When they reached the hermitage, the guru started preparing for his Dhyāna.
The śiṣya was not able to control his feelings and asked his guru:
“You are a pious person and a brahmacārī, how can you carry that woman on your shoulders, don’t you feel that it is wrong”
The guru smiled and replied:
“I dropped the body on the other side and you are still carrying her weight”
Brahmacārī- brāhmaṇa (Pure consciousness), cārī (Moving) -Therefore, it means ‘one who lives in constant awareness of Brahman;’ ‘one whose awareness is absorbed in pure consciousness, whose mind is above the duality of male/female, who sees the atman in all.’ One who is in constant communion with the atma is a brahmacārī. He is above kancana (Wealth) and Kāminī (Amorous woman).
It is the story of life, you carry the burden of shad ripu. The lesser the baggage you have the easier will be the travelling.
