Ishtadevtha is the preferable deity who can help you spiritually and emotioanlly. It is amongst the primary layer of protection and also the first step to any higher level puja. Every higher order deity can bless you only when the power within you is pleased. Otherwise, even Brahma himself cannot give you any boon, this law of nature is explained in Gita. That is the very reason why before initiation, the sadhus are asked to worship their Iṣṭadevatā and take their permission.

Ishtadevtha is our protective cover who fights and stops any external obstacle, negative energy before entering the family or person. It also warns from time to time about family rituals and moral conduct. One who worships without remembering Ishtadevtha , his prayers will not reach the deity. This is because these deities are bridge for spiritual progress and no prayers to them causes the bridge to stop working. As a result external obstacles, malpractices etc., negative energy starts reaching the person without any hindrance. Sometimes the worship of iṣṭha being done by individuals or families gets consumed by some other external energy, that is, worship neither goes to the iṣṭha nor does it grants any benefit. This happens because of the absence of proper knowing of istha.

Why are people unaware of Ishtadevtha ?

It is very difficult to ascertain which is your primary deity. This is because it is a completely uknown area. Sometimes people who have not advanced in spiritual stage are unaware of this knowledge as well. This primary deity is also lost because of moving of families or families forgetting their ishta.

How do we find out Ishtadevtha- Process and requirements?

We perform astamanglya Praśna which is a very divine process to ascertain the Ishtadevta. During the process deities are invoked and enquired about the Ishtadevtha . Sometimes unknown deities are been asked to help in the session. It is a tedious and time consuming process and requires following:

1. The knowledge about birth date, time and place.
2. Special offerings to deities and arrangements of special puja.
3. Pooja takes around 2 to 3 hours and requires lot of Paraphernalia.
4. The process gives us certain numbers for calculations.
5. These numbers are analyzed in separate process for answers.
6. The horoscope is matched to prashna to ascertain the swaroopa of the deity.
7. This process is only done for Hindus as we are not aware of other deties.

We find multiple references for finding out iṣṭha ḍevtha in classical jyotiśa granthas however none of them work properly when applied. The concept of searching for iṣṭha requires certain things:

The concept of Iṣṭha ḍevtha in natal chart.

1. The person should be a believer according to chart. Jupiter, Moon, fifth house lord (from moon and ascendant), AK, AMK Should be unblemished. The signs of these planets should not be occupied by malefics. An atheist’s horoscope has no use.
2. Since jyotiśa is a universal science, it should cater to everyone. There would be a primary deity or power whom a person will worship regardless of his/her religion. So the astrologer should have knowledge of other religions and their Gods as well.
3. The strongest planet in the chart in terms of spirituality will always lead everything else.
4. Sometimes the person leaves the īśta and starts following a different faith. In that case the daśa will dominate the results.
5. Though it seems very easy but it is the most difficult analysis in reality. Also, it requires in-depth study of culture and deities. Let us understand it in light of jyotiśa.

Now in Hindu parlance ḍevtha concept is divided based on signs and planets. Signs and planets are sātvika, rājasika and tāmasika so each ḍevtha has three attributes. For example, Siva can be Sātvika in some form and Tāmasika in aghora or bhairav form. So let us take an example. Suppose Moon is the strongest planet in chart. Now Moon is associated to devī in many standard texts. However, moon’s digital strength and its position will decide the type of devī. Moon with malefic strength and tāmasika gṛha will force for worship of kali, in case of rājasika gṛha, the person will worship Laxmi and in case of Sātvika gṛha the person will worship Vaishnavi, brahmani or Saraswathi.

The primary problem is to deduce the strongest planet.
